People's Produce Project
The People's Produce Project brings healthy foods to residents, businesses, and schools in Southeastern San Diego. Project New Village and Healthy Works teamed with local residents to create the neighborhood's own farmers market and community garden.
There is a higher rate of most diseases in Southeastern San Diego than in the rest of San Diego County. Part of the reason is that the area lacks access to healthy foods. Poor nutrition is a key risk factor for developing obesity and other chronic diseases.
Residents can attend free healthy cooking classes and receive a locally-based cook book. The classes and cook book help ensure that people know how to use the new healthy foods in their environment.
The People's Produce Project serves as a model for other communities. It demonstrates that local residents can make their communities healthier, safer, and more economically viable places to live.
